Personal Web Space
Personal Web Space
Your fone.net account comes with personal
web space that can be used for storage, ftp, or a personal website.
Personal webspace cannot be used for
commercial purposes.
If you want to create a website to sell
products or promote your business
please contact the web department for
commercial hosting prices and more information.
To upload your personal website:
- Right click an empty place
on your desktop, point at New, and left click Folder. Name the new folder:
web (all lowercase).
- You can make your web page
using any of the many programs available for this, including Microsoft Word,
Microsoft Works, Dreamweaver, Front Page, etc . . . (If you are using Front
Page you need to let us know, the instructions are slightly different and we
have to set it up on a different server.)
- The important thing to
remember when creating your page is that it must be named: index (all
lowercase) and it must be saved as a web page (*.htm or *.html), and that it
needs to be saved in the new web folder you just created.
- After your page is created
and saved to the web folder on your desktop you need to upload it to our
server.
- There are several ways to do
this:
- You can use a program like
WS_FTP or Fetch, or you can use the upload feature built into your
page-making program. Just make sure to enter the host name as
www.fone.net. Log in using your username and password (the same one you
use for dial up or email). Then find the web folder on your desktop and
transfer it to the web folder on your server space. Do not delete any
folders that are already in your server space, they are there for a reason.
If you have trouble accessing or viewing your server space let us know, we
may have to do some manual configuration to set it up.
- You can also upload using
Internet Explorer. In the address bar type
ftp://www.fone.net, enter your username and password when prompted, and
click Go. Then you can drag and drop the web folder located on your desktop
into your Internet Explorer window.
- To view the web page you’ve
just created go to
www.fone.net/~username. (“~” is usually in the upper left corner of
your keyboard and you need to shift for it.)
Personal Web
Space using Front Page
We have a different server for
web pages created in Front Page to ensure that all the extensions will work
correctly.
The main differences are:
a.
It requires a password of at least 10 – 15 characters, with a mix of
numbers and letters. This might not be the same username/password
combination you use for internet and email.
b.
Front Page websites are set up by request.
c.
The host name for ftp is
websites.fone.net.
d.
The web address for others to view your website is
http://websites.fone.net/username.
e.
You do not need to
place everything into a web folder, just upload it directly.
