Our Philosophy

Our philosophy is based upon the simple premise that the Brittany is now and should always be a true dual dog, adhering not only to the established AKC standard for the breed but living up to its origins as a premier hunting dog able to find and point game for its master with enthusiasm and style.

We do occasionally breed our dogs. In the past we have waited until the dog is a finished champion in either the field or ring. We have lost some very nice dogs to accidents and then not been able to get a litter from the dog. The economic landscape the last few years has kept us from competing as we would like and we decided to use a bitch earlier if she meets our criteria of solid field ability and conformation. Our dogs must always show themselves to be capable hunters! They must have their hips certified as either Good or Excellent by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals hip dysplasia screening process before we will consider them for potential inclusion in our breeding program. We subscribe to the ABC Code of Ethics

We research all our breedings extensively and well in advance of any breeding. Our intent is to bring together top lines that will produce good looking, hard hunting, intelligent, and stylish Brittanys that are also great companions, with sweet and gentle dispositions. We attempt to breed to the best dogs available, at times these dogs may be little known outside our area however, we believe them to be of national caliber. When we do these breedings they are not taken lightly and they are done for a specific reason and with a plan for the future. When we announce a breeding you will be able to see the Sire and Dam and read about them on a special page on our web site. We will also have a five generation pedigree available for you to examine. We are always happy to talk to you about our dogs and if you live in the Denver area or happen to be in the area we would be pleased to meet you, show you our dogs, answer your questions and discuss Brittanys with you.

The Brittany standard was written to describe what a Brittany should look like. While it serves as the standard by which a Brittany is judged in the show or conformation ring, we feel it should also apply to the pet and the field trial dog. No standard exists for how a Brittany should hunt, however, we feel that our Brittanys should be competitive in field trials but just as importantly, they must display the attributes of a fine gun dog: desire, bird finding ability, intelligence in using the wind and searching out objectives, a subperb nose, retrieving ability, and style on point.

On Breeding a Litter of Pups

We breed for one purpose and that is to improve the breed. We breed for ourselves first. Each breeding is well researched and has generally been planned for some time with a longer range plan in mind. We generally keep the pick of the litter. The other pups we try to place in homes where they will be campaigned either in the field or in the ring, hopefully both. We give priority to people that will compete with the pups, to hunters and then to pet homes. Decisions are not made until the pups are eight weeks old. At that time they are evaluated for conformation. We get pups started at about 4 weeks on a wing and have them exposed to live birds shortly thereafter. We take the pups afield so that we can assess boldness and desire to hunt. After we have made our pick, the other pups go to their new homes. If you are local you can come pick your pup based upon the order that your deposit is received. We only accept deposits after the pups are four weeks old. We often have special agreements prior to a breeding where the 2nd pick is reserved for the breeder or breeding sponsor. Our pups are vacinated twice and dewormed prior to going to their new home. Special arrangements can be made to hold a pup beyond 8 weeks. Our puppies come with a heath guarantee and we retain the right to buy the puppy back should the owner ever decide to sell the pup.

We like to keep track of all our puppies once they go to their new homes and like to see pictures and get reports on how they are doing throughout their lives. We will help you show or trial any of our dogs and we will help you train, at our facilities, your Rainbow Ridge Brittanys puppy for field work as well. Our puppies are special to us and we want them to be special to you as well.
