Tech Tips: The one area I find most neglected by Harley owners is their tires. This is the only thing that connects you and your motorcycle to the ground. How your tires wear are dependent on several things; how you ride, how you load the bike and your tire pressure. As you know the temperatures in Colorado can effect your tire wear because of the pressure.
Stamped on the outside is the recommended tire pressure and I suggest for the best wear you keep your tires at the prescribed pressure. This should be done while the tires are cold and not after they have been ridden for a few hours. For example, if the tire has 38 psi on an 80 degree mid summer day, it could lose enough air to have an inflation pressure of 26 psi on a 20 degree day six months later. This represents a loss of 6 psi over 6 months and an additional loss of 6 psi due to the degree temperature reduction.
At 26 psi, your tire is severely under inflated and dangerous! It is a good rule of thumb to check your tire pressure about once a week. If you have any questions as tho what pressure to run, or if your tires require replacement, come by the service department at Durango Harley-Davidson and we will check them for you at no charge.
See you in the wind,
Jim Richards
