Eudora/Email FAQ
|
Is there a Eudora manual?-
Go to the Eudora web site for full tutorials and manuals for Eudora products, for both Macintosh and Windows platforms.
Where can I get the latest version of Eudora?
- Go directly to the download area on Eudora's site.
Can two or more people use Eudora on the same Macintosh?
- You can do the following with any version of Eudora for the Macintosh:
First, run Eudora and configure it for one user. Next, quit Eudora and drag the Eudora Folder out of the System Folder and onto another location on the hard disk (it doesn't matter where). Replace it with an empty TeachText file called Eudora Folder (this step prevents another Eudora Folder from being created in the System Folder in the future).
You may now rename the Eudora Folder anything you want, including the name of an individual. Then, make a copy of it and give the copy another name (this can be done for as many users as necessary). Each user now has their own personal mail folder and can launch their copy of Eudora by double-clicking on the Eudora Settings file in their own folder (an alias to that settings file also works well). Remember, upon first starting Eudora, each user must change the POP account information to reflect their own POP account address.
Can two or more people use Eudora on the same Windows 95 or Windows NT computer?
- You can do the following with any version of Eudora for Windows 95 or NT:
First, run Eudora and configure it for one user. Next, find the file in your Eudora directory called Eudora.ini. NOTE: If your Windows display options are such that you don't see a file called Eudora.ini, only a file called Eudora with no extension but with a notepad icon: go to the View: Options: View menu in the title bar, and un-check the "Hide MS-DOS file extensions for file types that are registered" option. Click "apply" then "OK".
The Eudora.ini file contains the account settings, including your POP account and so forth. Rename the Eudora.ini file to any name you like, including the name of a person. For the purpose of this example, we'll call it Jeckyll.ini (don't use any spaces or special characters in the name of the new .ini file.) Then launch and quit Eudora. Eudora will have created a new Eudora.ini file.
Now create a shortcut of the Eudora.exe file and put it on the desktop (or wherever you want it). In our example we'll call it JeckyllMail. Use the name you gave your own file. Do a right-click on JeckyllMail, open the Properties section, and go to the Shortcut page. In the Target field, type the path of the Eudora.exe file (it will probably already be there), then a space, and then the path of the Jeckyll.ini file. It might look something like this:
C:\Eudora\Eudora.exe C:\Eudora\Jeckyll.ini
Click on Apply, then OK. Double click on the JeckyllMail shortcut. Eudora will come up, with the original settings from the first e-mail account (in Tools:Options in newer versions or Special:Settings in older versions). Change the settings to the correct information for the Jeckyll e-mail account. Click OK, then quit Eudora.
Now, for example whenever you want to access your Jeckyll mail, open Eudora by double clicking on the JeckyllMail shortcut. You must quit and restart Eudora to switch accounts.

Nicknames from the Special menu, click on New, make up a nickname, and then enter the actual
Email address in the top-right window where it says address.
How many days are UN-READ e-mail messages kept
on the server? - We have not set any limit on the number of days
messages are left on the postoffice server as of yet. We prefer that you follow
our instructions for configuring your email porgram(s) to download your mail to
your machine. That way we do not have to be concerned with the number of days or
the amount of mgs used for your email box. If you changed the configuration to
leave the mail on the server, please note that, if your mailbox gets too
full, the Email program on your machine might have problems downloading the
messages, to the point where it may not be able to at all. If this happens, there
is only one fix: we delete your mail and you lose all your new messages.
As long as you are not on any mailing lists and do not have people sending you
large attachments, you should have no problems.
I selected to leave my Email on the server, now
can I delete them off the server? - To delete mail from the server,
Open your email program preferences or in Eudora go to Special and then Settings,
Checking Mail, uncheck the
Leave Mail on
Server option, and then check your mail. This will cause the
program to check for email that has not been downloaded and then delete all the
mail from the server.
Last night I tried to send email and I had
problems. When I clicked the "send" button, a status box returned reading,
"resolving address for www.fone.net" and then I got an error message box reading,
"Error getting network address for www.fone.net. Cause: non-authoritative host
not found".
These errors are all indications that your modem lost
its connection for some reason. Some common causes include: - You are not connected to the Postoffice or the Internet. Re-dail using your dialup connection software.
- Random
telephone line noise
- A Call Waiting tone
- Someone picked up
another phone on the same line as the modem.
- A windy day can cause noise
on the lines. In fact, the phone company will only guarantee the noise level on
your "local loop" to be low enough for you to maintain a 2400 baud connection.
- Modem compatibility problems can also cause this.
